About this practice test
The Microsoft Azure Solutions Architect Expert (AZ-305) is the most senior architecture credential Microsoft offers for Azure. Where the AZ-104 Administrator exam tests workload-level operations, AZ-305 tests enterprise-scale architecture — multi-subscription governance, hybrid and multi-region design, identity strategy, data architecture, and large-scale modernization.
This practice test gives you 250 scenario-style multiple-choice questions with detailed, multi-sentence explanations. Questions are deliberately Expert-level: longer setups, multiple plausible answers, and the right choice usually trades two valid options against a constraint you have to spot. The bank follows the latest AZ-305 curriculum and matches the official exam-blueprint weighting.
What the AZ-305 exam covers
- Design identity, governance, and monitoring solutions (25–30%) — Microsoft Entra ID architecture (single tenant vs multi-tenant, B2B vs B2C), hybrid identity with Microsoft Entra Connect / Cloud Sync, Conditional Access policies, Privileged Identity Management (PIM), Multi-Factor Authentication and passwordless, management group hierarchy, Azure Policy + Initiatives at scale, Resource Locks, custom RBAC roles, Azure Monitor design (Log Analytics workspace strategy, Application Insights, Azure Monitor Agent, Workbooks, KQL).
- Design data storage solutions (25–30%) — choosing among Azure SQL Database (vCore, DTU, Hyperscale, Serverless), Azure SQL Managed Instance, SQL Server on Azure VMs, Cosmos DB (APIs and consistency levels), Azure Database for PostgreSQL / MySQL / MariaDB, storage accounts (Standard vs Premium, Blob vs Files vs Queue vs Table), Data Lake Storage Gen2 for big data, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory and Azure Data Share, Azure Cache for Redis, storage redundancy strategies (LRS, ZRS, GRS, GZRS, RA-GRS, RA-GZRS).
- Design business continuity solutions (10–15%) — backup architecture with Azure Backup (VMs, SQL, Files, blobs, PostgreSQL), disaster recovery with Azure Site Recovery, database HA / DR (Always On, Auto-failover groups, Cosmos DB multi-region writes, Azure SQL Database active geo-replication), recovery objectives (RTO / RPO), Availability Sets vs Availability Zones vs Region Pairs, backup vault redundancy.
- Design infrastructure solutions (25–30%) — compute selection (Azure VMs and series, Azure VM Scale Sets, App Service Plans, Azure Functions hosting plans, Azure Container Apps, Azure Kubernetes Service, Azure Container Instances), networking (Virtual Networks, peering, hub-spoke topology, Azure Virtual WAN), hybrid connectivity (Site-to-Site VPN, Point-to-Site VPN, ExpressRoute and FastPath, Virtual WAN), load balancing (Azure Load Balancer, Application Gateway with WAF, Azure Front Door + WAF, Traffic Manager — when to use each), Azure DNS, Private DNS Zones, Private Endpoints vs Service Endpoints, migration tooling (Azure Migrate, Database Migration Service / Database Migration Assistant), modernization patterns.
Exam format on Microsoft Learn
The live AZ-305 has 40–60 questions over roughly 120 minutes of seat time (about 150 minutes total including instructions). It uses multiple-choice, multiple-response, drag-and-drop ordering, hot-area, and case studies (long scenarios with multiple linked questions). Passing score is 700 / 1000 (~70%). The exam is available in English, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, and Portuguese, at Pearson VUE test centers or online proctored. Recertification is annual via free renewal assessment on Microsoft Learn.
Who should take this?
Working solutions architects, cloud architects, platform engineers, technical leads, and senior engineers with at least 2 years of hands-on Azure architecture experience. Microsoft recommends starting from AZ-104 (Administrator); while not strictly required, AZ-305 assumes you are fluent with Azure operations. Many candidates pair AZ-305 with AZ-400 (DevOps Engineer Expert), AZ-500 (Security Engineer), or AZ-700 (Network Engineer) for specialty depth. Azure architects often hold Microsoft Entra certifications too (SC-300, SC-100).
